Five Days Mt Nyiragongo Expedition - DRC
You will leave Kampala exceedingly early in the morning headed for Rwanda- Gisenyi. The journey is 577km which would take about 12 hours including lunch and a stop at the border. However, this journey can be broken down by spending an overnight in Kisoro and cross the border the next morning into Rwanda. This journey takes us through south western Uganda, which is known for its beautiful scenery, so be sure to capture these landscapes on our drive.
On this day, we shall get up for breakfast while we wait to get picked up by our guide from Goma in the afternoon. You can choose to take a stroll around Gisenyi or go visit the lake to pass some time. At 1pm we shall go to cross into Goma-Congo with the help of our Congolese guide. We shall wait for our guide to process our Visas and permits before we drive to the hotel for lunch.
We shall have a sit down while the guide briefs us about the next day’s climb to Nyiragongo mountain. After the briefing you will have lunch and then you can choose to relax or do whatever you want in the afternoon.
Nyiragongo means a woman carrying a child on the back. The Nyiragongo mountain has two craters beside it; that is Saheru and Baruta hence the explanation for the name of the mountain.
On this day is when we start our journey to the headquarters for briefing. We shall be escorted by the army on every step of this climb to ensure our security. After the briefing, you will be asked to get a porter if you need one along your climb. There are breaks and food provided during the climb to keep you energized and motivated. The climb starts at 10 am and usually takes 6 hours to the peak to the top unless if you are not fit enough. Make sure to carry warm clothes, warm socks, gloves, and a beanie. The climb will provide you with amazing views on every stop you make, so make sure to make your cameras ready. Once you make it up the top, you will forget the difficulty you have gone through. Take your time to enjoy the views of the worlds biggest crater lake, the surrounding mountains, and Lake Kivu. After spending time on the mountain, you will have dinner and some tea to warm yourself on the cold night. Feel free to go watch the lake some more or just call it a night. The temperature varies between 0-10C.
You will wake up early in the morning to catch the sunrise over the Volcanic crater lake. After this you will have breakfast, pack your bags, and get ready for descent. The descent takes 4 hours with some breaks included.
Once we arrive Goma town, you will be driven to the border to enter back into Gisenyi. You can choose to spend a day in Gisenyi or drive to Uganda after freshening up. Once in Uganda, we shall spend a night in Kabale. Or if your flight is from Kigali, you will be driven to the airport that day.
After breakfast, we shall start our journey back to Kampala with one stop at the Equator and as well grab some lunch there. After lunch we shall proceed to Kampala. However, you have a choice to catch your flight from Kigali airport back home or from Entebbe.
